The different modes

The Zaurus' swivel screen makes it possible to operate the device in five different modes:

  • Laptop mode

  • Thumb-board mode

  • Tablet mode

  • Presentation mode

  • Closed mode

Laptop mode

Laptop mode enables you to use the device just like an ordinary laptop on a desk or other flat surface.

Figure 2.3. Thumb-board mode

Thumb-board mode

In 'thumb-board' mode the screen is tilted (gently!) away from the keyboard as far as it will go – "click". This mode is ideal for text entry and editing using your thumbs on the keyboard while on the move.

Figure 2.4. Tablet mode

Tablet mode

With the screen open at 90° to the keyboard, hold it at either side and swivel (180° clockwise) away from the keyboard. Fold it down flat onto the keyboard and voila! the Zaurus is now in tablet mode. The screen display automatically re-orientates to portrait format. You can choose between handwriting recognition and on-screen keyboard to enter text in this mode. (NB: to turn the screen back to face the keyboard, twist anti-clockwise. Again, the screen display will automatically re-orientate to landscape format.)

Presentation mode is not often used, but can be handy: swivel the screen round as for tablet mode to face away from the keyboard, then tilt it back slightly towards the keyboard. Perfect for presenting a slide show of your photos.

When the Zaurus is closed it can still be used to listen to music.
