Surfing the Web

As long as you can get a connection to the Web, browsing from the Zaurus should in most cases be straightforward.

First, however, you need to create at least one connection setup to specify all the settings to be used when you wish to access the Internet. (Of course, you may wish to create two or more connection setups, for example one to use Wi-Fi when in the office and another to use a dial-up modem when at home.) You can do all this using the Network applet on the Settings tab of the Home page: in the Services tab of the Network dialog, either tap the Add button to name and create a new connection setup, or just tap the Wizard button to be guided painlessly through the necessary steps.

Once this is done, you can simply launch the NetFront browser. If you're not already connected you will be presented with a dialog asking if you wish to connect and that should be it! Then either type a URL into the location field or select a bookmark from File->Bookmark. We have pre-installed a few bookmarks to get you going.

Here are a few difficulties you might encounter and some suggested solutions:

Page doesn't fit on screen

If you're fed up with always scrolling horizontally here are some alternatives worth trying:

  • Make the text smaller using Fn-1

  • Try "Smart Fit" (View->Wrap Content->SmartFit) which lays out the page to suit the screen width.

  • Try "Just Fit", which acts in a similar way to Smart Fit, but with less dramatic changes to the layout. This option seems to work well with a lot of sites.

Browsing is slow over a slow connection such as GPRS

You could try switching off viewing images (View->Show Images)

Concerned about security

If you wish, you can prevent cookies from being stored automatically on your Zaurus: use the option Tool->Browser Setting to do this. In the General tab of the Browser Setting dialog you can change the option for cookies from Accept to Prompt or Never Accept.

If you want to switch between more than one web page

You can create another window, which appears as another tab, as in FireFox.

Check that Google search you did yesterday

Go to File->History to see the places you've been to.

Save a map so that you can view it off-line

Browse to a map of the area that you want to record (we've added a bookmark to one of the more popular mapping web sites). When the map is displayed select File->Add Page Memo and you'll be presented with a Save dialog. (This is a filename so you'll have to remove any unacceptable characters). Once it is saved, you can go to the Browser off-line, select File->Page Memo and choose the name that you previously stored it as. The original browser page will be displayed.

Get up-to-date off-line versions of your favourite web pages

The NetFront browser can scan selected bookmarked pages and automatically create page memos so that you can view these pages off-line.

Go to Tool->Auto-Cruise Setting and select the bookmarks that you want page memos to be created for (you need to create the bookmarks first). Then select Start Auto-Cruise. The pages will be scanned and page memos created. The page memos can be viewed by either selecting Auto-Cruise List or File->Page Memo.
