Returning the Zaurus to box-fresh state

There may be a time, most likely when you've got your Zaurus into a mess with too much tinkering, that you want to start afresh, with the software as it was when we sent it to you. This is achieved in three stages: first you need to reset the Zaurus, which will return the software to Japanese; secondly you have to navigate through the rebooting process in Japanese (don't panic, we're here to hold your hand), and thirdly, and with a sigh of relief, you can restore the English-language software from the backup available from our website www.figlabs.com.

[Note]Note

Before you start make sure you have ready both the power lead and a CF or SD card containing the appropriate backup file for your model of Zaurus in a folder named Backup_Files. If you need help getting the backup on the SD or CF card then see “Copying files from your PC to a memory card”.

The process is not complicated but needs to be followed carefully.

1. Resetting the Zaurus

  • Make sure the power lead and USB cable are disconnected from the Zaurus.

  • Remove the battery (move the battery cover switch to the left to unlock).

  • After five seconds, replace the battery, moving the battery cover switch to the right to relock.

  • Plug in the power lead and make sure the orange power light is showing.

  • Hold down the OK button as indicated in the diagram above, press and release the On/Off button, then wait until the Zaurus comes on before releasing the OK button.

  • You will be presented with the dialog above containing the following four options:

    1. Cancel the reset process and boot normally

    2. Run file system check

    3. Reset to factory setting

    4. Flash/Update

Choose the third option (Reset to factory settings).

  • If you have a C3000, C3100 or C3200 you will be presented with another dialog containing three options:

    1. Normal

    2. Extended

    3. Backup/Abort

    Choose the first option (Normal).

  • You will then be prompted with a final confirmation dialog, as above: select the left button (Y). The Zaurus will now reset itself to factory state, which will take a little while.

2. Restarting the Zaurus

  • When the Zaurus is ready, the usual "CG Silicon / Zaurus" screen will be displayed initially. Just wait.

  • Next, the word Zaurus centred with two lines of Japanese text will appear. This is the screen calibration phase. Just tap anywhere on the screen.

  • Tap on each of the five crosshairs as they appear.

  • Press OK for the Time page.

  • Press OK for the Owner info page. You are now ready to restore from the backup. Nearly there.

Removing unwanted folders

  • Go to the Files tab on the Home page (the tab with the document icon)

  • In your Internal Disk navigate to and delete the folders, you can use the Fn+BS keys to do this, a confirmation dialog will be displayed, tap on the left-hand button to confirm the delete. C1000, C3100 and C3200 users will not be able to delete Attachment_Files folder, but this doesn't have any adverse effect so it's OK to leave it.

  • You are now ready to do a restore

Restoring the backup

  • Insert the CF or SD card containing the backup into the appropriate slot.

  • Press the Home key until the Settings tab of the Home page is displayed (it's the one in the middle, with the spanner icon ). Select the green Backup/Restore icon .

  • The Backup/Restore dialog will now be displayed. Select the lower of the two options near the top of the dialog (the higher one is for creating a backup). The circle next to the lower option should now be blue.

  • Tap on the drop-down list below these two options and select either CF or SD as the location of your backup file.

  • In the drop-down list to the right, you can now specify the backup file you wish to restore from, if it is a standard Fig Labs backup then it will have a name such as figlabs_0.11.

  • So, with Restore selected (blue circle against lower option near the top of the dialog), correct memory card type selected on the left and correct backup file selected on the right, you are ready to proceed. Tap on the button at the bottom of the dialog (Start).

  • You're then presented with a final confirmation dialog. Tap on the lefthand button.

  • After waiting a while the Zaurus will restart, once this completed re-boot your Zaurus and normality is restored!
