Checking and sending email

If you use web-based email then you just need to get connected and use the Web browser, see “Surfing the Web” for more details.

If you have an email account with POP3 or IMAP support you can use the email application – for more information on these terms see POP3 or IMAP4.

Setting up the email client

In general, if you access the same email account from different computers, the best protocol to use is IMAP4. However, in the case of the Zaurus' built-in email application we wouldn't recommend it: we have found the POP3 support more reliable.

Go to Mail->Accounts and tap on the New button. Fill in the details in both the Incoming and Outgoing tabs.

Getting email

To get all email messages in all your accounts, use Mail->Get all mails. To get mails from a specific account, use Mail->Get mail in->account name. If you've got a lot of messages in your inbox then we recommend that the first time you perform this operation you use a fast and cheap connection. It is also a good idea to restrict the size of emails that you bring down. This can be done by selecting Mail->Account... and then selecting the account and Incoming tab where you'll see the button Skip large emails. Tap on this to set the limit you require.

Messages in your inbox are in three colours: blue are unread, black are read and red are those that haven't been downloaded as they are larger than the limit currently set. To download one of these messages, open it and then select Mail->Get this mail.

[Note]Note

You can't download any email messages larger than 3 MBs.

[Tip]Tip

When viewing a message, the useful feature Mail->Add to Address Book enables you to add any of the email addresses in that email to your address book.

Sending email

To create a new email, either tap on the document icon or select File->New mail. To reply to or forward an existing email, select or open it then either tap on the envelope icon or select the appropriate option from the File menu.

Tap on the To: button to enter recipient details, including cc: and bcc:. You can also enter From: details here if you have multiple accounts. E-mail addresses can either be entered directly or accessed from the Address Book by tapping on the person icon.

[Tip]Tip

You can also send emails by going to the Address Book application and tapping on the email address of your intended recipient.
